Sexual and gender health fellows are an integral part of the clinical services provided to patients as well as our ongoing research activities. Our curriculum is a longitudinal one with the ultimate goal of developing clinical competency to treat a wide variety of sexual and gender related concerns on an independent basis. Besides offering assessment and brief therapies for sex and gender related issues, we provide an extensive amount of long-term therapy, addressing deep developmental wounds that may occur with a variety of co-morbid psychiatric conditions.

The training is designed to meet requirements for psychology licensure as well as the competencies required for certification required by the American Association for Sexual Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT). The fellowship prepares fellows to provide sex and gender therapy for a wide variety of individuals, oftentimes with co-morbid psychiatric diagnoses.

  • Through provision of 13-26 hours per week of direct individual, family, or group therapy under supervision, learn the methods of treating a variety of sexual dysfunctions, disorders, sexual orientation, and gender identity issues. Depending upon the specific fellowship, the amount of time devoted to clinical activity versus research varies, but are specified in the fellowship descriptions.
  • Learn to work effectively in an inter-professional team (faculty psychologists, psychiatry physician assistant, nurse practitioner, family physician, support staff) 
  • Learn to provide education to medical students, family medicine residents on topics such as sex history taking, basic counseling skills for sexual and/or gender concerns and problems. 
  • Advance skills in conducting scholarly activity that advances the field of sexual and/or gender therapy and research.

There are required training activities, including a minimum of 3 hours of clinical supervision per week plus additional clinical and research supervision.

In addition, the fellows will develop a research plan that is carried out under supervision and completed at the end of the fellowship. It is expected that fellows will present the project at a local or national meeting. Fellows are encouraged to turn their project into publishable articles in peer-reviewed publications under faculty supervision. The ultimate goal of this part of the curriculum is to develop research skills to carry out independent research. The extent of research training is dependent upon the type of fellowship offered.
